Rats are pests that, like other living beings, seek optimal living conditions. Unfortunately, these are often close to us humans, and without an effective protection of e.g. your sewer, the rats may be closer than you think.
Do you suspect that there are rats at play, or do you know?
Whether you have an acute rat problem or just want to be ahead of a potential rat visit, there are a number of things you can do.
Select your current situation below and read more about what to do.
Preventive
Prevention against rats is an important part of the maintenance of any property. In addition to carrying various diseases, the rat can also cause significant damage to buildings and infrastructure. They tend to gnaw on everything from electrical wiring to wooden structures, leading to expensive repairs and, in some cases, fire hazards.
Below you will find good advice on how to prevent rats on your property.
Seal entry points – Rat blocker
Make sure all holes, cracks, and openings to your property are sealed or blocked. Rats can enter through very small gaps.
A rat guard in your drainage system is the safest and most obvious choice against rats.
Remove waste
Make sure to dispose of your waste in a closed, rat-proof bin and avoid leaving garbage bags outside.
Limit water sources
Eliminate standing water and ensure that rainwater can drain away effectively, as rats are attracted to water sources.
Remove pet food and similar attractants
Avoid feeding birds outdoors, as this can attract rats. Likewise, fallen fruit from trees can serve as a food source for rats, so don’t let it remain on the ground for too long.
Clean up
Clean up the garden and the area around your property. Remove piles of wood, garden waste, or other materials that could provide hiding places for rats.
With a rat blocker installed, there is one less thing you have to worry about.
Nordisk Innovation already protects over 300,000 households in Europe against unwanted guests in the sewer.
In Denmark, there are very strict requirements for rat blockers. They must be produced in a material that the rat cannot gnaw on, such as acid-resistant stainless steel AISI 316. All welded joints must be stained after completion so that the welds cannot be attacked by rust. Of course, this is standard with us.
In fact, our rat blocker contains not just one, but two flaps – suspended independently of each other. This allows free passage of the home’s wastewater, and at the same time, it prevents rats from entering the home via the sewer system.
Is the effect documented?
Rat blockers from Nordisk Innovation are all WRc approved for use in the UK. To obtain WRc approval, the product is tested by an independent, accredited body in accordance with WRc’s certification requirements.
Does the product require servicing?
Within the first three months, you should regularly inspect the rat guard by removing the manhole cover. If there are small accumulations of paper or debris at the rat guard’s opening, these can often be removed by rinsing the guard with a garden hose or by pouring a bucket of water into the drain.
To ensure trouble-free operation, it is important that the rat guard is serviced at least once a year. During servicing, the rat guard should be removed, cleaned, inspected, and any defective parts replaced before being reinstalled. You can set up a service agreement with your local authorised sewer contractor.
Can a rat blocker block the sewer?
In very rare cases, a rat guard can cause a blocked sewer. However, this is typically due to items being flushed down the toilet that shouldn’t be, such as wet wipes or similar materials, or because the rat guard has not been properly serviced.
Can I install rat blocker myself?
You are welcome to install the rat guard yourself, but we recommend that the work be carried out by a professional. It can often be difficult to determine which model should be installed without proper training, and professional installers have the expertise to ensure correct installation.
Is the product sustainable?
The rat guard is 100% Danish-made from acid-resistant stainless steel sourced from Sweden and Finland, ensuring a long lifespan. The product is easily recyclable.
In addition, a rat guard is preventive and helps minimize the habitats of rats, thereby reducing the need for poison and lethal traps. Less poison is beneficial for our shared marine environments.
By preventing rat damage to your sewer system and building, you also reduce the resources required for repairs.
