For many, it’s a scary thought: lifting the toilet lid and finding a rat that has found its way up through the pipes. Although it sounds like a scene from a movie, it is unfortunately a real risk that rats can crawl out of the toilet. But how does it happen, and how likely is it really? Read on and find the answer.
How can rats crawl up through the sewer?
Rats are incredibly adaptable animals. They are skilled swimmers and can effortlessly navigate sewer systems and enter homes through pipes. Rats have flexible bodies that allow them to squeeze through very small openings – in fact, a rat can get through holes as small as 2 cm.
The sewer systems that connect our toilets provide a direct pathway for rats to swim from their usual habitats in the sewers and up into our bathrooms. With their strong claws and ability to hold their breath for up to 3 minutes underwater, the rats can crawl against the current through the pipes and end up in your toilet.
How likely is that?
While it can happen, it’s important to point out that it’s not a common occurrence in most homes. Rats will generally avoid coming near humans if there are other food sources available. However, it is more likely if you live near a poorly maintained sewer system or if there are cracks and leaks in your pipes. Older buildings can also be more vulnerable if the sewer systems are not updated or properly maintained.
The rats will typically crawl up through the toilet if they feel threatened. This can either be if they are chased by other rats, or during cloudbursts, where rising rainwater pushes the rats.
What can you do to prevent rats from going to the toilet?
Fortunately, there are several precautions you can take to minimize the risk:
Rats in the toilet: Rare, but possible
