Imagine waking up in the middle of the night and a rat jumps into your son’s bed — biting his finger. That’s exactly what happened to Fredrik and his family one dark night in their home. An experience that is not only unpleasant, but downright scary and can shake any family to its foundations.
Fredrik runs his own plumbing company in Sweden and knows everything about pipes, sewers and installations. Still, he and his family were struck by what most people only imagine as a nightmare. Because even with professional insight and experience, he could not prevent a rat from finding its way up through the toilet one night – and all the way into the family home.
An unexpected invasion of the home
It all started with strange scratching noises in the yard. After a while, the family found out that a sewer pipe had burst, and unfortunately everything went wrong when a rat escaped through the toilet. On the same night, the rat managed to jump into his son’s bed and bite him. On his 15th birthday. A feeling of insecurity and shock spread throughout the home.
Fredrik says: “He was really scared. He came to us, bleeding, and told us that he had been bitten. He had felt something over the duvet, withdrew his hand — and then it bit him. And it happened on his 15th birthday.”
Now they always keep the toilet lid closed and have installed a rat blocker to prevent it from happening again.
From broken sewer pipes to luxury tunnels
The rats had dug in through an old, broken sewer system, which the family had to replace from end to end. It turned out to be a major operation, which also meant that insulation and drainage material had to be removed because the rats had made tunnels through.
The insurance only covered internal damage, so it was an expensive process that required both time, money and patience.
Why rat blockers are crucial
Fredrik emphasizes that even though it was previously impossible to install, it became a matter of course when the pipes were replaced. The old sewer pipe had settled because of rats that had undermined the soil. When digging, flushing and replacing the drain, the rat was on the wrong side of the system. It probably felt pushed into a corner and therefore came up through the toilet seat.
When the rat blocker was installed on the same day, the rat was already inside the house – but as soon as it had gotten past the barrier, it could not get back in.
His clear advice to others is: Don’t wait to secure your home against rats – install a rat blocker before it’s too late.
Don’t take a chance with rats in the home
Rats aren’t just disgusting — they’re invasive, can damage your property, and threaten your family life. Fredrik’s experience shows that it can happen to anyone, and that it can suddenly become one’s worst nightmare. With a rat blocker, you can prevent rats from gaining access to your home and ensure a safe everyday life for you and your loved ones.
